Doctor Who star David Tennant has announced he will leave the hit science-fiction series at the end of 2009.
Tennant, who has played the tenth incarnation of the Time Lord since 2006 after taking over from Christopher Eccleston, said he will leave the role after completing production on the four special episodes to be screened in the UK in 2009 and early 2010, according to report from the BBC website.
The good news here is the show will go on and continue to change and grow and be awesome. The bad news is that we will miss our Doctor. For many of us, Tennant became our Doctor and for this we thank him.
And there is something to be said for leaving when people will miss you. It shows that Tennant is incredibly smart. And dreamy, but that goes without saying. ;)
Check out the interview here:

I was having a good day until I heard about this. Is the next Doctor David Morrissey? Paterson Joseph?

It hasn’t been announced yet. David Morrissey plays a character who CALLS himself The Doctor in the upcoming Christmas special, but I strongly doubt he is THE Doctor. Rich Johnston from LitG is positive it’ll be Paterson Joseph, but who knows?

Darn. I really liked Tennant’s Doctor. I wonder if there’s any possibility the storyline could be tweaked so that Catherine Tate could get a go at the role. Whomever it is will have some big shoes to fill.

dude! i was thinking Catherine Tate, too! i think she would be an amazing doctor, even if just for 3 or 4 episodes.

The news of his departure was on the main news today. I can’t think of any other show where someone leaving makes the prim time news (except maybe a Bond actor quiting but thats a film anyway). Which just shows the love for Doctor Who and how big it is over here.

I would like to see either Stephen Fry or James Nesbitt as the next Doctor.

Weren’t there rumors a while back about Robert Carlyle as a successor? I could envision him doing a good job with it.

If Stephen Fry played the Doctor they could get Hugh Laurie could be his companian and it would be like the old days of Fry and Laurie.

While Paterson Joseph seems to be the favorite, an old friend of mine contacted me with an interesting idea – Sean Pertwee, grandson of the 2nd Doctor.
