I think this episode was great. It shows the talent that the Supernatural writers have to make references and pay tribute to movies like The Fly while avoiding a complete talentless ripoff like some other shows this Fall (we're all looking at you Heroes). Great review... Thanks!

I think the reason I enjoyed this episode as much as I did is because although it was clearly a "Monster of the Week" bottle episode, it also drove the plot forward quite adroitly while further exploring the tension in Sam and Dean's relationship. Also, I found the Monster to be an interesting one - I think I generally prefer the djinn/rugaru/tulpa type episodes, which feature lesser-known (but not made-up-by-Kripke) beasties, to more run-of-the-mill vampire/demon/zombie fare. And this monster, in particular, was an interesting one - he wasn't nearly as monstrous and one-dimensional as he could have been: I think Jack was shown in a pretty sympathetic light, all things considered - he was a victim of his own fate, and spent much of the episode struggling against what he was destined to become (much like Sam).

Post script. I really like your review and its analysis of Kafka and Croenenberg in relation to this episode. Very impressive and interesting.

I love Supernatural and was plenty entertained by this episode, but I wouldn't have rated it as highly myself. Maybe more like 3 or 3 and a half. I thought the themes between the monster of the week and Sam were good, but it just wasn't as emotionally resonant with me as last week's Dean meeting his mother and her family. And not quite action-packed enough for me, either.
