Well, it would take an exceptional storyline to make “the mummy episode” more than average for any show. So it’s no surprise that this episode of Eureka – the fifth in Season 3 – is solidly average.

There’s nothing really remarkable about the mummy story – scientists at General Dynamics open a centuries-old tomb, but not before being warned that the mummy is cursed, and then hijinks ensue – except to note that once again Sheriff Carter figures out the puzzle (actually, two puzzles: where the missing mummy is and what is making people get sick/die).

As for the big-picture stuff, Allison Blake sees Nathan’s “ghost” a few times – and discovers that he has embedded a hologram image of himself in the diamond necklace he gave her as a wedding gift. A little corny, but hey, she’s in mourning, so that’s OK.

And Eva Thorne’s secret doings are continued: She asks Henry to help her decode a cryptex (remember the puzzle box in The Da Vinci Code?), but he refuses when she won’t explain what it’s for. So she turns for help to Zane Donovan (played by Niall Matter), who’s the troublemaker/genius at GD (and wearer of Degree deodorant in those weird crossover commercials).

So the episode was entertaining, but not remarkable. Colin Ferguson is really great on this show – and especially in an episode like this, I’m struck by how well he plays Jack Carter. Eureka is not really a comedy – sort of a light drama, if there is such a genre – but it’s certainly funny, and that’s almost entirely due to Ferguson. My new TV boyfriend.
