This week, the TVZ team discusses the first part of the Doctor Who “Sontaran” two-parter, the Reaper season finale and the first season of Supernatural. Also, the news of the week, listener mail, the great DVD price debate and more! Plus which Television Zombies contributor has hair to rival the very best in cult TV? Hint: it’s not Jeff!

I think the Supernatural and TVZ heads have good hair, can’t go wrong with a mop top. simple, stylish, conditioner not required.

Wow. My voice came out pretty well.
Also Chris, I caught your GTA4 reference with the disposable babies.

I’m so glad you guys have decided to watch Supernatural - I really enjoyed hearing you discuss what you’ve seen so far, and I hope you continue to talk about episodes as you see them. The series starts strong but nevertheless definitely improves as it goes along, going from good to great. The early episodes are entertaining and scary “urban legend of the week” stories-in-a-bottle, but after a bit the main story arc takes hold and the show really kicks into overdrive. Outright bad episodes are few and far between. Although plot ideas occasionally seem derivative, the writing is smart and the show is self-aware enough that it will make fun of itself when it needs to in order to diffuse the “hey, they totally stole that plot!” feeling, normally with Sam or Dean making a direct reference to the source material in a wink-and-a-nod way that somehow always makes it all right. Some episodes are watch-with-the-lights-on scary, while others are laugh-out-loud funny, but regardless of tone they are uniformly good.
Incidentally, though they’ve moved away from it over time, in the first season the hook was that everything Sam and Dean investigated was rooted in real urban legend lore. If they talk about an event or a place, chances are good you can hop on google and look up the ‘real’ info about it. Once the show came into its own and episodes increasingly began to focus on the overall arc, that aspect of the show diminished a bit.
One distracting thing (to me, at least): Anyone else think that Jared Padalecki and Missy Peregrym look like they were separated at birth?
Also: Chuck was a great addition to the podcast! (Though I miss Jonah).

Thanks, Dan. I am really getting into Supernatural. As soon as I finish season one, I’ll give my thoughts and I definitely plan on buying the 2nd season on DVD.
