My old college friend Nathan and I love to make little films and videos from time to time. We decided to sign up for this year’s 48 HOUR FILM PROJECT and assemble a team to make a short film. The Film Project gives you a randomly drawn genre as well as a prop, character name, and line of dialogue that you must use to make a 4 to 7 minute film and turn it in exactly 48 hours later. You must do all the creative work of writing, filming, and editing within that time. You can arrange for cast and crew, scout locations, think about where to get costumes or props, but no generating the script or film before-hand. It would be difficult at best, since you don’t know which elements you MUST include until the last minute.
We invited Nathan’s sister to direct and my girlfriend to do the music and sound, since she’s studied it and is in a band. We met some great folks who helped us with acting, production management, directing, editing, and all sorts of stuff. We had a 9-member team and drew the “spy” genre on Friday night.
On Sunday, this is what we turned in (the credits don’t count as running time):
