Last week, Ain’t It Cool News picked up on an announcement that yet another classic British SciFi show is going to get the remake treatment: Blake’s Seven.

For those of you unfamiliar with B7, it aired in the late 1970′s and followed the exploits of the starship Liberator and her crew of criminals, escaped prisoners and rebels as they fought the evil and all-powerful Federation (you can read more about it on Wikipedia here)

The show had a budget even less than that of Doctor Who (and was the brainchild of the man who created the Daleks, Terry Nation), and it showed, with production values that would have been laughable in the 1950′s.

But the writing and the acting were first-rate, and B7 was clearly a big influence on later shows such as Babylon 5, Farscape and Firefly.

(Tidbit for Torchwood fans: the “hero” of B7‘s first two seasons, Roj Blake, was played by Gareth Thomas, who appeared as the villian in the Torchwood series one episode “The Ghost Machine”).

Hopefully, this new producting can combine a real budget and decent sets/effects with the great acting and storytelling that made the original series worth watching.
