I have always thought of myself as a watcher of good TV, I suspect, like the readers, writers, and podcasters of Television Zombies. I’ve had minimal patience for stupid shows and because I only get into what I get into, by default most shows are stupid. But here in this column I will be examining something fairly new to me and perhaps alien to you: casual TV.

There are certainly shows that I DVR every week (Lost), but increasingly I’ve been watching disposable shows. I’m not talking about bad shows that think they have good product (CSI), I’m talking about shows that you watch for reasons other than writing, acting, and visuals.

I think I can trace my experience here back to The Crocodile Hunter. I didn’t love that show and didn’t watch it every week, although I do own the movie (underrated). But when I’m cruzin’ TV Guide Channel with nowhere to go, I pull off at Australia’s Zoo and hang out for an hour.

I’m going to be reviewing those shows in this column. Shows you can watch every once in a while and have a good experience, but you don’t feel the need to follow them faithfully. These are not the best shows on. They aren’t my all time favorites and some I can only watch in very brief doses. They are casual shows that might warrant twenty minutes now and then.
